Nov. 26, 2020

It was Thanksgiving weekend November of 1962 and we had just finished moving from an upstairs apartment at 3351 Monroe St. to a downstairs apartment down the block at 3395 Monroe St.  We were managers of both buildings and wanted to get settled before our second child was scheduled to arrive around December 10, 1962.  It was Sunday evening, November 25, 1962, and we went to bed tired but happy we had completed our move.  I woke up around midnight not feeling well and discovered my water had broken.  With my first child the doctor had induced labor so I didn’t know what to expect in real time.  We called the doctor’s phone number to advise him we were on the way to the hospital.  We called Lynn’s mother who would be taking care of our daughter to tell her we were on the way over.  I hurriedly packed items for daughter to have at Grandma’s house.  We drove from Santa Clara over to San Jose to drop off our daughter with Grandma and she told us we better get going on to the hospital.  Lynn was driving rather fast the rest of the way to the hospital and we noticed a police car was following us but he never stopped us when he saw us turn into the driveway at the hospital.  It was now 1:35 a.m. Monday, November 26, 1962 and after a quick examination by the nurse, she told me not to cough or sneeze because the doctor had not arrived yet. Everything moved along quickly at that point and the doctor arrived on time to deliver a wonderful baby boy weighing in at 6 pounds and 13 ounces.  He was born at 2:29 a.m. which meant I was at the hospital less than one hour before he was born.  We named him Craig Alan Blaylock.  That was one Thanksgiving weekend we would always remember.  It was also obvious that we had miscalculated the date of Craig’s arrival.

Over the years, Craig has had many challenges, some good and some not so good but he is and always will be my son and I love him very much.  Happy 58th Birthday today, November 26, 2020, Craig.
